Sports Steroids Led Ex-Olympian to Change Her SexHeidi Krieger had never thought in her life that the glory of winning medal after medal in the shot put for her country would let her to a sex-change operation. The lady athlete who used to be the world’s top athletes in 1980s now sneers at the awards, and dismisses them as “doping medals” that turned her into him.

The female Heidi Krieger, now male Andreas Krieger, told CNN during an interview that her coaches fed her so many a steady regimen of steroids (performance-enhancing drugs) that she began to change physically and emotionally. Her hormones were so changed due to the drugs that she starting morphing into a man.

Krieger was quoted as saying: “I felt much more attracted to women and just felt like a man. But I knew I was not lesbian.”

Krieger also told CNN that while she was fed the steroids, her coaches told her that these are the vitamins that would enhance her performance, but alas she never knew the drastic result of it.

Now married and running an army surplus store, Krieger tells that he has now taken his life into his own hands and would not like to be seen as a victim.

According to CNN, it is estimated that East Germany used to have as many as 10,000 athletes on steroids at the time of its sporting heyday.

That's unbelievable. He looks like a true man now with receding hairline and there is a hint of shaved facial hair on his picture. I am glad that the sex change operation was good enough for him to get married. But there is a sad angle to the whole episode as well.

Heidi Krieger's story shows how a life has been destroyed by the then East Germany's brutal communist regime. For them lives were dispensable and only national glory by any means matters. The Chinese are following the well beaten East European sports path of the 80s.

East Germany suddenly and miraculously became a sporting superpower in the 1970s and remained so through the 1980s. But the country's sports stars paid a high price for their remarkable success because they were in a government program that systematically administered performance enhancing drugs to almost 10,000 sportsmen during that time.

Ines Geipel, a former sprinter and long jumper said; "They stole our souls and turned our bodies into mere objects".
